Are there any flowers more fragrant or beautiful than roses? Many gardeners and flower lovers would say no. There are many different varieties of roses that you can grow. Organic rose gardening is a great way to grow roses. If you are unfamiliar with organic gardening, it means that you will use only natural means of fertilizing and controlling pests. Organic gardening is safer and often more effective than non-organic gardening. You can use organic methods for plants, crops, livestock and of course, flowers.
The first step in growing organic roses is planning. You will need to plan what kind of roses you want and where you want to put them. Make sure there is enough room and your roses are not overcrowded. The next step is to make sure your soil is as healthy as possible. Healthy soil is a very important part of growing healthy roses. You can use plant and animal material to nourish your soil. This may include decaying flowers and plants and animal manure. In addition, certain minerals are great for the soil as well. If you don't want to make your own compost pile you can buy compost ready made in different sized bags.
Companion planting is another method of nurturing your roses and keeping pests away. Roses grow very well when placed close to garlic and onion, which in turn help deter pests. Roses also like being placed next to flowers like marigolds and herbs like thyme. Companion planting is one of the oldest and most effective organic gardening tips you can use. Another idea is to keep pests away using an herbal pest repellant. You can buy natural pest repellants from organic gardening catalogs or even make your own with a base of vinegar and pungent herbs. Even sprinkling hot pepper around your roses can deter harmful pests.
There are lots of books on the subject of organic rose gardening that can help you learn more about this subject. One title you may want to check out is The Organic Rose Garden by Liz Druitt. You may also want to read Hardy Roses: An Organic Guide to Growing Frost and Disease-Resistant Varieties by Robert A. Osbourne. Another popular title is Growing Roses Organically: Your Guide to Creating an Easy-Care Garden Full of Fragrance and Beauty by Barbara Wilde. Books like these contain all the detailed information you need to have a thriving rose garden using organic gardening techniques.
