Organic Hog Farming for Healthier Pork
![]() |
Pork is one of the most widely consumed animal products in the world and comes from pigs and hogs. Examples of pork products that come from these animals include bacon, ham, pork chops, pork roasts, pork ribs, pork rinds and even pigs feet. Pig ears are often used as dog treats. These animals are certainly some of the most multipurpose when it comes to food products. However, one of the most concerning things is the use of dangerous hormones when raising pigs and hogs. This is why many are turning to organic hog farming which results in healthier and safer pork products.
Have you ever wondered what the difference between a hog and a pig is? Well, a pig is a young hog that weighs less than 125 pounds. A hog, on the other hand, is the term used to describe all members of the swine family. Hog farming is a generic term used to describe the raising of pigs, boars and other swine for the purposes of producing food products. Organic pig farms are much like non-organic farms except they do not use chemicals or hormones when raising their pigs. The pigs are kept in fenced pastures or farm buildings. They do not have sweat glands, so they roll in mud to keep themselves cool. Pigs will eat most anything they are fed.
You should know that the FDA does not approve the use of any hormones for hog farming. If hogs become ill, antibiotics may be given. However, there are regulations that require the antibiotic be out of the system of the hog before it is processed for food purposes. Today's pigs are fed special organic diets and bred to be less fatty than pigs of the past. Companies like Tyson Foods are leading the way when it comes to producing healthier, safer pork products. If you are a hog farmer you should definitely investigate raising your animals in an organic way.
Organic hog farming is only one type of organic farming you may want to consider. Growing produce without dangerous chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers is recommended for the healthiest results. You will find an incredible amount of organic products sold in stores today. These products are popular with consumers which is a definite testament to the desirability of organically farmed animal and plant products.
